In this segment, we heard from Mathew Cole, a third-generation Floridian, UF graduate, an avid runner, reader, and supporter of the arts. While out for a jog in the Spring of 2015 and listening to an audiobook, he learned of the Jesuit’s optimistic examen prayer. Inspired, Matt searched for an app that promoted positive daily posts, the sharing of nonprofit activities, and a philanthropic spirit. Surprised to discover no such app existed, he created his own! Examen was born.
Matt contacted Brian to design and develop Examen and both were in studio today to discuss its usage and features. It is currently in Version 1.0 and available in the iOS Store and will be in the Android Store within a few days. Designed as a community that promotes positivity, users upon registering will be guided through submitting their volunteer history, another feature of the app designed to act as a central warehouse for volunteering while falling in line with the mission of the app which is focusing on positive and inspiration.
Brian’s vision for PopKorn Apps grew out of his passion for accomplishment. With a background in Aerospace Engineering, app design fit well within his skillset and he discusses some of the methodology including LEAN and Agile in this segment and how they apply to design. He has worked on satellites that are now in orbit and stresses that as an engineer, his eye for attention to detail and ability to pick up on efficiencies to keep costs minimized with the app development.
Other designs by Brian include the RhiKnow App that he developed last year that works as a social network to get recommendations from just your friend/peer network on places to eat, travel and more; think of it as Yelp with just recommendations from people you know and trust. This app can be found on iOS and Android operating systems free of charge too. Brian’s other creations include Cheap Buzz which is a great way for college students to hear about deals at local bars. CheepBuzz allows for bars to post any special and have the users sort through and see what they might like. Users can even get better specials by using the “Chick-In” function, which will only work while they are at a given bar during the time of the deal. There is also Eazy Menu which is a new and innovative way to help you pick your best option to eat at a large number of restaurants. EazyMenu takes your dietary preferences and restrictions to help comb through large menus while helping you easily read in a dark restaurant, saving you time and stress. There have been many app success stories in the news lately including PikMyKid which we highlighted last year just after launch and today is in discussion with Microsoft on a deal. With the move from desktop to mobile, apps are in high demand, you just need an idea to get started.
