On this segment of #ThatBusinessShow, we featured Eric J. Crall, M.D. who is a family physician that has practiced in the Tampa Bay area for 19 years. Two years ago he left traditional fee-for-service medicine to start a direct patient care (DPC) practice, an evolving business model based on a low monthly subscription fee that includes all the services he provides in his office with no added costs.
Many consumers are unfamiliar with the term direct primary care and Dr. Crall works to educate our listeners on this movement in this segment. With rising healthcare costs, he talks about how insurance has been abused by consumers and that insurance should only be a resource when affected by catastrophic situations, not basic care. If consumers would handle basic care out of pocket and only rely on insurance for major situations, then the cost of healthcare would decrease dramatically. Dr. Crall talks about how at his practice, he is able to spend ample time with patients and not feel the pressure of insurance regulations all while keeping his income and free time where he wants it.
With it being Open Enrollment and many people experiencing rate increases, Dr. Crall is seeing an increase in demand for his type of service and network. He shares with consumers that they need to talk with their health insurance agent about just buying a catastrophic health policy that meets the requirements of the Affordable Care Act and then come see him for your basic medical treatments and care. You even have access to him 24 hours a day and via text!! By utilizing the Tampa Bay Direct Care Network, Dr. Crall states you can lower total healthcare costs by 30 to 50 percent!
Dr. Crall also elaborates on the challenges he himself is facing in growing this network, oftentimes getting pushback from Doctors, insurance companies as well as consumers. He remains undeterred though and asks you to experience the service and benefits for yourself. Listeners familiar with #ThatBusinessShow know that we often touch on podcasting. Tampa has many podcasters and resources for them including the Florida Podcaster’s Association which meets monthly at McCalister’s Deli on WestShore in Tampa. In addition, The Tampa Bay Business Owners puts on a workshop or two per year on the benefits and basics of podcasting including one this past week which highlighted Dave Jackson from Libsyn and several panels discussing their podcasts and how you do not need to have a broad topic to be successful. There are many micro-niches up for grabs in this industry now and we heard from Lee Silverstein who hosts the Colon Cancer Podcast which he explains has helped so many with this disease. Podcasting is an easy way to enhance reach to your business or as a way to get your message out to more people at minimal costs. You can be up and running with a podcast for only a few hundred dollars, of which you may already have in place!

Happy Friday and welcome to #FocusFriday on this edition of #ThatBusinessShow! We realize of all the days in the week to focus, that Friday is probably the most difficult but Focus and Friday fit well phonetically! This segment had Angie Lusk, Chief Strategist of Focus on You Strategy in the co-Host seat as Juliann Nichols, CEO, was unable to be with us due to a loss in her family and our thoughts / prayers are with her and her family.
Jamie and Angie discussed some events and resources right around the corner and are summarized below for our listeners and readers and now you the reader!
The remainder of the show focused on our guest Danielle Vona, Founder of the Marketing Posse. The Marketing Posse is an “outsourced marketing department” that provides strategic business planning and brand positioning, marketing solutions and talent development. Danielle’s background is uniquely positioned to bring big brand thinking to companies of all sizes and her approach uses customer insights to develop strategic business plans filtered through a strong brand position. She is also a main stage speaker at Focus on Entrepreneurs Conference and a host committee member which is tasked with vetting the speakers for the event. Her topic at the conference will focus on:
- What are you trying to achieve with your business (vision and objectives)?
- Why should someone choose your product or service over another?
- Have you created a sense of urgency that they need you now?
The discussion then turned to “planning”. With 2017 right around the corner, this is on the front of many business owner’s agendas. She identified and discussed three areas that impede planning in businesses and how to overcome them. These include:
- Difficulty in making time
- Being overwhelmed
- Consistently measuring results
Danielle shares with us how she and her team put together a plan for 2017 which includes their goal of reaching $1M in revenue in only their 2nd year in business! She elaborates on how this structure of planning extends to her clients and some of the resources she uses to help your office has its own marketing department. Danielle closes with a discussion on another critical area that business owners need to focus on in 2017 and that is development of their staff highlighting and discussing the points below:
- Communication: have you communicated a clear vision to the team? Are roles and responsibilities clear? Do they have specific objectives that are attainable, but stretch them? They have to understand what success looks like in order for them to be successful.
- Feedback: challenge them with work that is meaningful and give them feedback often. They need to hear when they are not meeting your expectations and want to celebrate when they are exceeding them. Celebrate success, even the small wins, to foster a culture of success.
- Tools and Training: are you investing in your people? Let them know that you care about their growth and that they are valuable to you by investing in the tools and training that will benefit both them and your organization. You have to set your people up for success in order for them to be successful.
